Mahabharata episode 40

The ascetic said: “hey Janamejaya This sacrifice of yours is like the sacrifice of Soma, the sacrifice of Varuna, and the sacrifice of Prajapati at Prayag. May our beloved ones be blessed!

It is said that the sacrifices of Shakra were a hundred. Similarly, the number of sacrifices of others is also said to be a hundred. This sacrifice of yours is equal to all those sacrifices. May our beloved ones be blessed.

This sacrifice of yours is like the sacrifice of Yama, the sacrifice of Harimedha, and the sacrifices of King Rantideva. May our beloved ones be blessed!

This sacrifice of yours is like the sacrifice of Gaya, the sacrifice of King Shashabindu, and the sacrifices of King Vaishvanara. May our beloved ones be blessed! May it be auspicious!

This sacrifice of yours is like the sacrifice of Nrga, the sacrifice of Ajamidha, and the sacrifice of King Dasaratha. May it be auspicious for our beloved ones!

This sacrifice of yours is like the sacrifice of King Yudhishthira, the descendant of Ajamidha, which was heard by even the gods in heaven. May it be auspicious for our beloved ones!

This sacrifice is like the sacrifice of Satyavatisuta Krishna, who was himself a worker. May it be auspicious for our beloved ones!

The Ritvijas gathered here are endowed with the charisma of the sun fire and they are performing this sacrifice of yours or yagna like the Kratu of Vritrahara Indra. There is no knowledge that they do not know. Nothing given to them will ever be in vain.

I am sure that there is no Ritvija equal to Dvaipayana in any of the worlds. His Ritvija disciples, who are skilled in their own work, travel the entire earth to perform the sacrifice.

The great soul, the one who is adorned with the colors of the Hiranya, the one who devours the world, and whose path is darkened, the radiant fire god, whose south-facing peak is shining, is waiting to consume your sacrifice.

There is no other person in this world who is as brave as you in protecting his subjects. King! My mind is always pleased with your courage. You are truly as powerful as Dharmaraja or Yama.

You are like the real Vajrapani Shakra, who protects all the subjects of the world. There is no other Purushendra like you in this world, and similarly there is no other Yajna Grihapati like you.

You are like Khatvanga, Nabhaga or Dilipa. You are equal in influence to Yayati and Mandhata. Your brilliance is equal to the brilliance of Aditya. O Suvrata! You shine like Bhishma.

In my opinion, like Valmiki, your courage is restrained. Like Vasishtha, your anger is regular. Your lordship is like Indra and your light is like Narayana.

Like Yama, you are knowledgeable in the injunctions of Dharma. Like Krishna, you are endowed with all qualities. Like the abode of the Vasus, you have wealth and are the treasure of all the elements.

In strength you are equal to Dambodhbhava. In weapon knowledge you are equal to Rama. In brilliance you are equal to Aurva and Tritara. And like Bhagiratha, it is difficult to look at you.”

The Suta said: “Thus praised, the king, the members, the Ritvijas and the Havyavahana were all pleased. Seeing the gesture shown by all of them, King Janamejaya said thus.”

This is the fiftieth chapter of the Sri Mahabharata, in the Adiparva, in the Astikaparva, in the Sarpasatra, in the Astikakritarajastava.
