11. The desire of Kadru and Vinata.

Shaunaka said: “Suta! Retell in detail the great story of the saintly poet Astika that you told me. You tell the story melodiously, using the right syllables. We are delighted by your words, which are like those of your father. "Your father has always been busy with our caretaking. So tell me the story you are telling, just as your father told you." The Suta said: “I will tell the story of this Astika just as I heard my father tell the story. Brahmin! In the past, in the Devayuga, Prajapati Daksha had two auspicious daughters. Both these sisters had assumed the form of a wonderful goddess. They were the wives of Kasyapa: Kadru and Vinata. Kasyapa, the husband of Prajapati’s daughters, who had attained supreme happiness with his wives, bestowed boons of love upon them. Hearing that Kashyapa was going to grant them good boons, both the women were filled with incomparable joy and love. Kadru asked for a thousand Nagas, equal in brilliance, as her sons. Vinata asked for two sons, each more stronger than that of kadru’s sons. Their husband Kashyapa granted Kadru and Vinata the boon of countless sons, saying, "May it be so." Saying, "Wear the womb with vigilance," and pleasing his wives with boons, the great sage Kashyapa went to the forest. Viprendra! After a long time, Kadru gave birth to one thousand eggs and Vinata gave birth to two eggs.

Their delighted maids placed the eggs in separate hot pots. And so five hundred years passed.

Five hundred years later, Kadru's children hatched from the egg. But Vinata's two eggs never broke. Then the shy ascetic Vinatha, who was desirous of having a son, broke one of her eggs and found her son inside. We have heard that the son, whose upper body had only grown and whose lower body had not yet grown, became enraged and cursed his mother in this way: "Mother! Out of greed, you broke my unequal body and brought me out. Therefore, you will become a slave." Mother! If you patiently wait for another five thousand years without breaking this other egg, your son born from it will free you from slavery. Mother! This could only happen if you do not break this egg and do not make this other son of the sage kashyapa, a man with a deformed body like me. If you want him to be exceptionally strong, you must take special care of him for five hundred years." Thus, the son of Vinata, cursed, ascended into space. Brahmin! He is the Aruna, who is always seen at dawn. "Bhrigushardula! In due time, Pannagasuda Garuda was also born. As soon as he was born, he mounted his wings, and set out in search of the food that Vidhata the god had prescribed for him."
