Mahabharata episode - 22
Shaunaka said: "We have heard about the powerful and
greedy serpents. What did they do after learning of the curse?" The Sutta
said: “The venerable Lord Sesha, having abandoned Kadru, performed a great
penance, fasting and consuming only the air.
He performed penance in the forests of Gandhamadana, Badari,
Gokarna, and Pushkara, and on the Himavat mountain. In all these holy
pilgrimages and shrines, he was solitary, a regular devotee, and a constant
seeker of life.
The patriarch saw the lord, his hair tied up, his skin and
flesh withered, and performing severe penance. The father said to the ascetic
Satyadhruthi: "Shesha! What are you doing? Do good to the world."
"Anagha! The worlds are burning due to your intense
penance. Shesha! Tell me the desire in your heart." Sesha said: "All
my brothers are weak-minded. I do not want to live with them. Lord! Please have
mercy on me for this."
They are always engaged in jealousy and hostility towards
each other. That is why I have undertaken penance. I do not want to even look
at them. Father! They are always giving trouble to Vinate and her son. They
have been hating him, who has become so powerful thanks to the boon of their
father, Mahatma Kashyapa. "I am doing this penance to attain liberation
from the body. I do not want to live with them for any reason."
Brahma said: "Shesha! I know everything about your
brothers. Your brothers are in great fear due to the curse they received from
their mother for committing a crime." Bhujangam! I have already made a
solution for this earlier. Do not grieve for the sake of all your brothers. Shesha!
Ask for any boon you like. I, who am greatly beloved by you, will grant you a
boon today.
"Pannagottama! I have observed that your mind is
engaged in the Dharma. May your mind be still steadfast in the Dharma." Sesha
said: “Father! May my intellect be engrossed in God, religion, and penance.
This is the boon I desire.”
Brahma said: "Shesha! I am pleased with your prayers
and peace. May this task that I am telling you, as my mission for the sake of
the people, also be done by you." "Shesha! This beauty, which is
swaying, carrying mountains, valleys, oceans, and cities, stand firm, so that
she remains unshaken."
Sesha said: “God! Blessing! Lord of the worlds! Lord of the
gods! As you have said, I will carry this jewel on my head, unmoving.” Brahma
said: “O most excellent Shesha! Go under the feet of Mahi. She herself will
pave the way for you. By carrying this earth, it will be as if you have done
something very dear to me.”
The Suta said: “That lord, the chief of the nagas, said, ‘So
be it,’ and entered the cave, carrying the goddess Mahi on his head, and
embraced this ocean of fire.” Brahma said: “Shesha! You alone are the best of
all the serpents and the god of righteousness, having borne this mahi. Only
Indra and I can bear this mahi.” The Suta said: “Thus, according to the decree
of Vibhu Brahma, the mighty Naga Ananta lives beneath the earth and alone
carries this universe. The immortal father, the Lord, appointed Vainateya
Suparna as the companion of Ananta.”
