18. Garuda defeating the gods in the battle.
Suta said: “Hey the superior one among all the bramhins! While all the deities were standing ready for battle, Gurutmanta, the king of birds, reached them. Seeing that mighty one, all the gods trembled with fear and began to fight among themselves with all their weapons. Among the protectors of Soma Ameyatma, Vidyudagnisamaprabha and Sumahavirya Bhauvana were also there.
He fought for a moment with Patagendra and fell having stuck in between the wings, beak and tentacles of Patagendra and died in the battlefield. That khechara raised a huge dust storm by stretching his wings wide and plunging the three worlds into darkness and gave tension to the gods. Since the entire area was covered with dust, the gods fainted. Those who stood waiting for Amrita were unable to see him in the dust. Thus Garuda smashed the guardian deities of the three worlds by giving a blow using his wings and beaks. Then the god Sahasraksha was terrified and thus gave command to the god vayu in this manner: “Hey Vayu! It's your job to stop this rain of dust!”
The mighty god Vayudeva blew the rain of dust aside. When the darkness was destroyed by lord Vayudeva, the gods again started to fight against the bird. That mighty bird, having stuck down by the blows given by the gods of heaven, roared like a great cloud that terrified all beings. Mahavirya Pakshiraja flapped his wings and flew away. He flew in the sky and stood upon the gods. Then all the deities including the god Vasava gave him blows heavily using their various weapons like pattisha, parigha, sula, mace, shining arrows and Adityarupi chakras. Even though he was hit by various weapons at the same time, Pakshiraja, who was fighting evenly, did not get tire at all. The brave bird Vainateya sparkling like a wild fire in the sky, attacked all the gods using his wings and chest and made them run helter skelter in all directions. The gods who were hit by Garuda lost in the battle before Garuda and started running away. A lot of blood started oozing out from the bodies of those gods who were hit severly by Garuda’s claws and paws.
Having got hit severely by Patagendra all the gods were defeated and the Gandharvas fled to the east. The Vasus and Rudras ran towards the south. The Adityas fled to the west, the Nasatyas to the north. While running these people looked back turning again and again to see Mahojasa Garuda engaged in battle. In this way that brave Khechara bird fought with the heroes namely Asvakranda and Renuka, Shura Krathana and Tapana, Uluka, Asvasana, Nimisha, Praruja, Pralina, etc. That mighty Vinathasuta wounded the gods using the tip of his wings, claws and paws like Sankrddhaa Pinaki in Yugantaka. All the gods who were beaten heavily by him appeared as black clouds from which blood was oozing out profusely. After making all the gods lifeless in this way, that Patagashrestha proceeded towards Amrita. He saw that fire had engulfed it from all the sides.
The flames of the fire covered the entire sky and seemed as if they were burning the sun itself, tossed by the fierce gale. Then the noble Garuda assumed eighty-one faces and drank several rivers from those mouths and came back swiftly on his winged chariot and poured those rivers into that burning fire. Immediately after clearing and choosing the fire Garuda transformed himself from that huge form to the small form and got prepared to enter the place where the amrita was kept.”
