16. Garuda taking hold of the branch of the tree with Valakhilya and flying away

Suta said: “As soon as Mahabali Garuda touched that branch with his talons, he also grabbed the severed branch to break it. He saw Valakhilya hanging upside down while smiling at that severed branch. Afraid of their destruction, Khagadhipa, desiring to save them, took the branch in his beak and slowly ascended, shaking the mountain itself.

Flying like this with elephants-kachchapa-valakhilyas, he saw many countries but did not find any land worthy of landing. Then Avyaya went to Mount Gandhamadana and found his father Kasyapa engaged in penance. His father, Lord Kashyapa, knowing what his intention was, saw that divine figure, brimming with brilliance and strength, swift as the wind, gigantic as a Shailasringa, sharp as the curse of a Brahman, inconceivable and unknowable, all-terrifying, mighty, brilliant as the veritable fire, invincible by the demons, able to crush mountain peaks like Kritanta, who could absorb all the waters of the ocean, and destroy all the worlds, and addressed him: “Son! Don't do anything that may lead to further pain. The Valakhilyas who live on the rays of the sun can burn you if they get angry.”

For his son's sake, Kasyapa, while appeasing the ascetic Valakhilya, said: “O Tapodhana! Garuda has arisen for public welfare. He has done a great job. It must be given your consent.” After hearing the words of Lord Muni, Taparthi Munis left that branch and went to Himavat Giri of the saints. After they left Vinatatmaja asked his father Kasyapa with his mouth biting a branch: “Lord! Where to drop the branch of this tree? Lord! Show me a region where there are no Brahmins.” Then Kasyapa showed him a mountain with snow-filled ravines where there were no Brahmins, unimaginable to ordinary men.

Seeing that Mahakandara in his mind, Pakshi Tarksha took a branch, a tortoise and an elephant and set off towards it with great speed. Even a thin garment made of the skins of a hundred great beasts could not wrap around the giant branch that the bird was biting and flying. Garuda, the great bird, crossed a hundred thousand projects in a short time. In no time the khechara reached the mountain his father had told him about and when he released the great branch, it rolled down with a roar. Shailaraja was shaken by the gust of wind raised by his wings and as the trees there fell down, it was a flowering year. The mani-kanchanas that adorned the peaks of that Mahagiri fell loosely from all sides of the mountain.

When this branch fell on several branches of Kanchan Kusumas, they looked like black clouds with lightning. Golden glittering twigs rolling down with mountain minerals reflected the rays of the sun. Then that celestial eagle soared to the top of the mountain and ate both the elephants and the tortoises. As he ascended that mountain peak as fast as his mind, ominous signs of fear and pain appeared to the gods. Indra's beloved diamond glowed with fear. Even during the day, meteors accompanied by smoke and fire started falling from the sky. All the weapons of Vasu, Rudra, Aditya, Vishwa, Maruta and other gods started fighting each other. Never before - not even during the Devasura war - had it been like this. Meteors began to strike simultaneously with a gale of thunder. The sky roared loudly even though it was cloudless. The god of gods rained blood. The garlands of the deities washed away. His brilliance faded. The clouds rose up and roared violently and rained down a profuse shower of blood. A rising dust storm hid the crowns of the angels.

Agitated by these terrible results, Shatakrathu along with other devas asked Brihaspati: “Lord! Why are these gross overestimates appearing? Can't we see any enemy who can defeat us in battle?” Brihaspati said: “Satakratu Devendra! By your own crime and by the penance of Valakhilya a wonderful being was born as the son of sage Kasyapa and Vinata. That mighty bird who can assume any form is coming to pick up the nectar. That bird, the greatest of the strong, is able to take away Soma. All impossible things become possible for Him.” Suta said: “Shakra, hearing this verse, said to Amrita's guardians: “A mighty mighty bird has determined to abduct Soma. I am giving you the fire in advance so that he does not pick it up by force. As said by Brihaspati, there is no one equal to him in strength.” Hearing this, the astonished devas, along with the diamond-bearing centurion Indra, stood guard around the amrita. He wore beautiful, precious, bronze and strange emeralds.

Numbering in the thousands, they were armed with many hideous weapons that were sharpened and sharpened. All were wearing smoke-flame emitting chakra, parigha, trishul, parashu, various shaktis, sharp karavalas and fierce maces according to their respective bodies. The bejeweled heaven stood there fearlessly, shining with the radiance of weapons. All the suras, shining like a flame, who could crush the asurapuras, even the incomparable balavirya tejasara, stood guard over the amrita with steadfastness. Because of the suras holding hundreds of thousands of parighas, that desert appeared like a furnace burning with the sun in the sky.”
