8. The effect of cursing agni by the sage bhrigu.

Suta said: “Vahni who was cursed by Bhrigu, angrily asked: “Brahmin! Why is this action against me? What adultery have I committed by walking in the path of righteousness and speaking the truth when asked to tell the truth? If the witness says otherwise than what he knows when he is asked to testify, he destroys his ancestors and his next generation - both for seven generations. There is no doubt that a philosopher who does not tell what he knows when asked also commits a similar sin. I can curse you too. But I prefer offering good hospitality to Brahmins. Although you already know all this, I am telling you to express that.

Through yoga I have made myself multi-souled and become Agnihotra, Satra, Kriya and Makha. Gods and Fathers are satisfied when I pour havissu inside me by vedic methods. All Gods are water and Pitrganas are also water. Deva and Pitras appear on full moon and new moon respectively. Gods are ancestors and ancestors are gods. Both of them are worshiped in two festivals of the lunar month. All the gods and ancestors eat through me. Therefore in all three worlds I am called the mouth of Gods and forefathers.

By pouring havissu inside my mouth, gods have food on full moons days and pitrus or ancestors have the food on new moon days. Since I happen to be their mouth how can I become the one who eats up everything? After thinking for a while, Vahni withdrew himself from all the bramhin’s Agnihotra, Yajna, Satras and Kriyas.

Without Omkara, Vashatkara, Swadha, Swaha, all activities stopped and all the citizens became sad. Then all the sages who were tensed went to the gods and said: “O gods! All the three worlds are effected by the destruction of fire. So take the necessary action without delay.” Then the sages and gods went to lord Brahma and informed him of the curse on lord Agni and that he had stopped his duties. “Great one! For some reason the sage Bhrigu cursed lord Agni. How can lord Agni, who is the mouth of gods and ancestors and is the supreme one in the sacred fire rituals, become the one who eats up everything in the universe?”

On hearing their words lord Bramha called lord Agni and spoke these soft words to the spirited one: “You are the Lord who creates and ends these worlds. You carry out the three worlds’ actions. How can you be so stupid? You are the Holy One who is grounded in all things of the world. Your whole body will not eatup everything. Only thy descending flames consume everything. Just as everything that comes in contact with the sun's rays is purified, everything that is burnt in you will be purified. Agni! You are the brilliant one born out of your own influence. Make this curse come true with this brilliance of yours. Accept from your mouth the offerings given to you and the gods.”

Vahni replied to Pitamaha saying, "So be it." The sages and all got engrossed in activities as before. All the gods in heaven and all the people on earth rejoiced and Agni became supremely happy. This is the history of the curse of Agni, the destruction of Puloma and the birth of Chyavana.”
