13. The fight between gods and demons for amruta

The Suta said: “Then the leading giants-danavas, armed with armor and various weapons, pursued and attacked the gods. Meanwhile, Lord Vishnu, the god of strength, accompanied Nara and took the nectar from Danavendra. Then all the gods received the nectar from Vishnu and drank it together with joyous cheers. While the gods were eagerly drinking the nectar, the demon Rahu, who was in the form of a god, also drank it. Just as the nectar reached the demon's throat, the benevolent moon and sun informed him of the matter. Immediately, the Lord severed his adorned head while he was drinking the nectar with His Chakra weapon. The giant head, like a rock, was severed by the wheel and soared into the sky, while the headless body fell to the ground. Since then, a permanent enmity has developed between Rahu's face and the Moon and Sun, and eclipses of both of them have been occurring continuously.

Then Lord Hari, abandoning his incomparable female form, threw various types of fierce weapons, causing the demons to stagger. Then the great battle of the Surasuras, the most terrible of all, began on the shores of Lavanambhasa. Thousands of spears, sharp spears, pointed spears, and various weapons were thrown from everywhere. The demons, severed by the wheel, spurted blood, and many fell to the ground, struck by swords, spears, and maces. In the fierce battle, shining heads adorned with golden crowns kept falling, being cut off by the wheel. The great demons, lying dead and bleeding everywhere, looked like mountain peaks stained with blood. As the sun set, the screams of thousands of demons dying from the wounds of each other's weapons could be heard from all sides. The sound of men tearing each other apart with swords and clashing fists in battle filled the sky. “Cut! Pierce! Chase! Advance!” were heard, accompanied by fierce battle cries.

While this terrible battle was going on, the gods Nara and Narayana entered the fray. Seeing the divine bow in the manger, Lord Vishnu, remembered the wheel. As he was remembering, the enemy-heated, equal in brilliance to Vibhavasu, fearsome in battle, resplendent in glory, and the excellent Sudarshana Chakra arrived from the sky. As soon as it arrived, the fearsome Achyuta, with his arms like an elephant's trunk, hurled a wheel of great brilliance with such great speed that it could have destroyed the entire city of the enemy. That wheel, blazing like a conflagration thrown by the supreme being, destroyed thousands of giants. Sometimes it burned like fire and consumed them all, sometimes it fell on them like a missile and struck them, and sometimes it roamed the earth and sky like a demon, drinking the blood of the fallen demons. The mighty demons, who appeared like waterless clouds, ascended into the sky and began to torment the heavens by dropping thousands of mountains on them.

Those great mountains in the forest valleys, falling from the sky, hit each other like clouds, creating a great roar. The earth trembled as thousands of warriors roared on the battlefield and mountains covered with forests fell. Then Nara entered the great and terrible war that was going on between the Surasuras, and with his arrows adorned with the greatest of arrows, he crushed those mountains and filled the sky with dust. Seeing the enraged Sudarshana blazing like a blazing fire as it roamed the battlefield, the great Asuras, defeated by the Sun, entered the earth and the saltwater ocean. The victorious Suras carried the mandara mountain to its place, worshipped it, and, filling the sky and heaven with their joyful shouts, returned to their respective places. "The Suras, having reached heaven, waited with great joy for the nectar. Indra and the other immortals put it in a vessel and gave it to Nara, named kireeti, for protection."
